PORTLAND, Ore. — You can always count on the youth to make things festive. In a celebration of the sport of track & field at the Portland Track Festival, freshman
Amir Ahmed highlighted four Vikings in action Saturday and Sunday with a personal best in the 800 meters.
Â
Racing Sunday at Lincoln High School, Ahmed placed fifth in his heat of the men's high performance 800 meters. Ahmed shaved more than a second and a half off his previous best at the distance with his finish in 1:53.59. Ahmed's time moved him up to sixth all-time in the freshman record book in what's likely to be the last race of his freshman season at Portland State.

Fellow freshman
Lyness Ota also ran at the Portland Track Festival, running the open 5k Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College. Ota finished in 17:31.83 in what was only his second-ever 5k outdoors for the Vikings. Ota ran his first 5k in 17:16.64 at the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational on April 13.
Â
On the women's side,
Ania Kapustka finished 11th overall in the women's open 800 meters Saturday. Kapustka finished in 2:18.82, which represents Kapustka's second-best 800-meter time of the season. Kapustka's time Saturday stands behind only her seasonal best of 2:18.19 at the Portland Twilight on May 4.
Â
Campbell Faust also ran for the Vikings at the meet, competing in the women's open 1,500 meters Sunday at Lincoln HS. Faust finished 25th overall in 5:29.24.
