PORTLAND, Ore. — Everyone seems to have an opinion on Portland these days. Both those of us who live in the city and those outside of it. To us, though, nothing is more quintessentially Portland than running a middle-distance event on a rainy day at Eldon Fix Track.
Â
That's exactly what the Portland State track & field team did Saturday, competing at the Portland Twilight. Not all of the 12 Vikings in action competed in middle distance events, but the majority did and did so in strong fashion.
Â
Campbell Faust got it started for the Vikings, winning the opening heat of the women's 800 meters in 2:23.08. Faust's time marked a new personal best by close to three and a half seconds and put her nearly three-quarters of a second ahead of the No. 2 finisher in her heat.
Â
Ania Kapustka added a collegiate best for the Vikings in a later heat of the women's 800 meters. Kapustka finished fourth in her heat in 2:18.19, bettering her time from last week's OSU High Performance Meet by nearly a full second.
Â
The men's side of the 800 meters featured its own strong marks for the Vikings.
Ian Parks didn't set a personal best but still won his heat by close to two seconds with his time of 2:05.34.
Lyness Ota followed in 2:13.90, setting a personal best by nearly half a second.
Â
Emma Stolte and
Tom Thake followed with seasonal bests on either side of the 1,500 meters.
Â
On the women's side, Stolte marked her full return from a stress fracture that held her out until last week's OSU High Performance Meet while finishing in 4:51.29. Stolte's time was two and a half seconds faster than her time the previous week. Teammate
Taylor Nichols followed in 4:53.62, which was her No. 2 mark of the season in the 1,500 meters.
Â
On the men's side, Thake set his seasonal best by three-quarters of a second while finishing fourth in his heat in 4:17.91.
Â
GG Nitunga led the group of non-middle-distance runners competing for the Vikings Saturday. Nitunga placed fourth in the men's 200 meters in 23.60 seconds.
Â
Eman Kargbo added a top-five finish in the men's 400 meters with a time of 52.51 seconds. Additionally,
Ashley Peterson placed sixth in the women's 400 meters in 1:00.40, while
Aleks Braich finished seventh in the men's 100 meters in 12.04 seconds.
Â
The Vikings will leave Portland behind next week, but for good reason. They head to the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in Bozeman, Mont., starting with the multi-events on May 8-9, and the rest May 10-11.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — One last out-of-state meet during the track & field regular season saw five Vikings jet down to the Oxy Invite Saturday at Occidental College's Bill Henry Track. Three of the Vikings set their No. 2 marks of the season in their respective events, as the Vikings set themselves up for next week's Big Sky Outdoor Championships.
Â
Two of the three No. 2 marks came in the field where
Noah Meucci and
Dieumerci Migani set their second-best marks in the men's hammer and triple jump, respectively.
Â
Meucci placed fifth in the hammer with a best throw of 150-09 (45.96m). Meucci's throw, which came on his fifth attempt of the day, went five feet farther than his mark last week at the OSU High Performance Meet. It didn't better his seasonal best of 154-07 (47.12m) from the Jenn Boyman Memorial Invitational on April 6, but it still put him on the right side of 150 feet for a second time this season.
Â
Migani, meanwhile, placed third in the triple jump with a best mark of 46-10.00 (14.27m). The mark came on Migani's first attempt of the day, which stands second to his mark of 48-00.75 (14.65m) from the Electric Forest Collegiate Open on March 16.
Â
Migani also ran the 100 meters Saturday, cracking 11 seconds for the third time this season while finishing in 10.98 seconds. Migani placed second in his heat, finishing behind only Scott Deng of the S.H.A.R.K.S Athletic Club, who finished in 10.94 seconds.
Â
Amir Ahmed posted his No. 2 mark in the 800 meters while finishing in 1:55.38 Saturday. Ahmed, who finished third in his heat, narrowly missed bettering the mark he set at 1:55.16 at the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational on April 13.
Â
Wendy Hare didn't post a No. 2 mark but instead finished second in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Hare placed second in 1:04.57, which was her third-best mark of the season.
Â
Alison Calvin-Stupfel was the fifth Viking competing Saturday, but no-heighted after three attempts at 1.60 meters in the women's high jump.
Â
The rest of the Vikings will join Saturday's crew in heading out of state next weekend. The Vikings head to the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in Bozeman, Mont., starting with the multi-events on May 8-9, and the rest of the events May 10-11.
