CORVALLIS, Ore. — The off-and-on rain in the Portland area didn't seem to dampen the spirits of the Portland State track & field team Friday on the opening day of the OSU High Performance Meet.
Dieumerci Migani set a top 10 mark in the long jump to lead the way for the Vikings at Whyte Track & Field Center. He wasn't alone, however, as the Vikings recorded seven personal or seasonal bests out of their 17 marks Friday.
Â
Migani's top 10 mark in the long jump was one of the Vikings' seasonal bests on the day. Migani bettered his previous best by three and a half inches while jumping 23-03.25 (7.09m). Migani, whose mark moved up to eighth all-time at Portland State, went past his old seasonal best three different times during the competition before topping out on his sixth and final attempt of the day.
Â
Migani now has all-time top 10 marks in the long jump and triple jump, both indoors and outdoors, as well as the indoor 300 meters and DMR.
Â
Noah Meucci posted the first improvement of the day for the Vikings, as he added 17 inches to his personal best in the men's discus. Meucci threw 136-04 (41.56m), bettering his seasonal best by close to eight and a half feet. Meucci went over his old seasonal best on all three attempts he made in the discus, with his second throw proving to be his best.
Â
Meucci also threw 145-06 (44.35m) in the hammer Friday, though that wasn't an improvement over the personal best he set at 154-07 (47.12m) at the Jenn Boyman Memorial Invitational on April 6.
Â
Eman Kargbo added another personal best for the Viking men while finishing the 200 meters in 22.78 seconds. Kargbo shaved eight-hundredths of a second off his previous best, which came at the Pacific Open on March 30.
GG Nitunga joined Kargo in the 200 meters, finishing in 23.29 seconds.
Â
The Viking women saw their improvements cover the gambit on the track between the sprints, mid- and long distances. In the sprints,
Ashley Peterson and
Wendy Hare both posted improvements in the 200 meters. Peterson shaved close to two-tenths of a second off her personal best while finishing in 26.78 seconds. Hare, meanwhile, set a new seasonal best by more than three-quarters of a second while finishing in 27.00 seconds.
Â
Hare also ran her second-fastest 400-meter hurdle race of the season, finishing fourth in 1:04.41.
Â
Taylor Nichols led the Viking women in the mid-distances, setting a big seasonal best in the 1,500 meters. Nichols finished sixth overall in 4:52.83, shaving five seconds off the seasonal best she set at the Oregon Preview on March 23.
Â
Emma Stolte won her section of the 1,500 meters while finishing ninth overall with her time of 4:53.73. It was Stolte's first outdoor race as a Viking after she redshirted last outdoor season and saw her win her section by three and a half seconds.
Â
No Viking woman has posted more improvements in 2024 than
Laura Beghin. She has six personal bests to her name between the 2024 indoor and outdoor seasons. It was unique to have her run a new race, then, which she did Friday with her first outdoor 5k. Beghin finished sixth overall in 17:26.54, more than 90 seconds faster than her fastest cross country 5k as a Viking.
Â
Dyllan Newville had run a 5k before but not one as fast as she ran Friday. Newville finished in 19:21.94, shaving over 30 seconds off the personal best she set at the Electric Forest Collegiate Open on March 16.
Â
The Vikings will have more chances to shine through the off-and-on rain Saturday, as the meet continues tomorrow.
Alison Calvin-Stupfel will open the day for the Vikings in the women's high jump at 12 p.m.
