PORTLAND, Ore. — It must feel like Portland State head women's basketball coach
Chelsey Gregg's birthday today. It's not, of course. But it has to feel that way after the Vikings raised over $8,500 during last week's Day of Giving fundraiser, and then signed 6-3 forward Katelyn Best Monday.
Â
So, money from friends and family? Check. And then the gift of a new player? Check. Pretty good birthday, even if it's not official.
Â
Best, a 6-3 post player, will join the Vikings as a freshman after prepping at Northwest Christian High School in Phoenix, Ariz. Best was a 1,000-point scorer for her high school team, as well as her region's Offensive Player of the Year in 2022 and a four-time All-Region first-team selection.
Â
"Katelyn is a versatile big with great length that can stretch the floor with her shooting, but also has great touch around the rim. Katelyn has a great work ethic and will continue to grow her game at the next level," Gregg said of Best.
Â
Best joins fall signee Kyleigh Brown, who led her Silverton High School team to an OSAA 5A state title, in the Vikings' 2024-25 signing class. Both will join the Vikings as freshmen. The program is expected to sign more athletes later in the spring.
