Vikings Drop Road Dual at CUI, 6-1

IRVINE, Calif – After kicking off their busy week with a comeback victory over Point Loma, the Portland State men's tennis team couldn't maintain their momentum on Tuesday, suffering a 6-1 defeat to Concordia Irvine at the CUI Tennis Courts.

The loss dropped the Vikings to 5-10 overall, while the Eagles picked up their 12th win of the season, improving to 12-7 overall.

CUI opened doubles play with victories at lines one and three, winning 6-0 and 6-2, respectively. At the two spot, Simon Kuszynski and Andrin Zuellig held a 3-2 lead when their match was halted.

The Eagles clinched the match with five singles victories, although only two of them were secured in straight sets. Jan Semerak at line one and Andrin Zuellig at line six, both rallied back after dropping their opening sets, pushing their Eagle opponents to a third before ultimately falling. Kuszynski opened with a 6-4 win at No. 2 but Max Renz fought back to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Andrea Brignacca clinched the Vikings' only point of the day in singles action, claiming his second victory of the week at line three. The graduate senior was dominant in his straight-set victory over Mario Aleksic, winning 6-2, 6-2 while improving to 5-7 on the year.

Portland State resumes action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 3rd, for their third match in as many days. They'll take on UC San Diego at the Northview Tennis Courts beginning at 2:30 p.m.
