St. George, UT – Competing in its first stroke-play event since last October, the Portland State Vikings shot an opening-round 323 at the Pizza Lady Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Southern Utah. The Vikings are tied with Montana for 12th place in the 13-team event that has two rounds yet to play.
 
Boise State holds a two-stroke lead with a 301 total on a challenging scoring day at Sunbrook Golf Course. Utah Valley is two shots back at 303. Though the Vikings are down the leaderboard, they are tied with Montana and just a single stroke behind another Big Sky Conference opponent, Idaho State. Weber State (310) is currently 13 shots ahead.
 
Junior Tannica Porter turned in the best round of the day for the Vikings with a four-over par 76. She is tied for 13th among 80 golfers competing and tied for second among 25 Big Sky golfers in the field. Excel Talangkarn of Southern Utah is the only player to shoot under par with a one-under 71.
 
The only other Viking to break 80 was Mariana Garcia Rosette. The senior posted a 79 and is tied for 40th.
 
Also scoring for the Vikings were sophomore Payten Shimizu (81) and freshman Cynthia Valerie Ong (87).
 
After early-round struggles, sophomore Bayler Brundage played her last 11 holes in two-under par to shoot 84. Brundage was playing as an individual. Freshman Momo Udom finished with 93.
