BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Portland State men's tennis team claimed its second victory of the weekend on Sunday, defeating Pacific (OR) 7-0 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
With a 2-1 record, the Vikings are off to their best start since 2019. The sweep was PSU's first of the season and third-ever against the Boxers.
The Vikings were dominant from start to finish. The momentum began in doubles play when
Andrin Zuellig and
Hubert Theriault blanked Joshua Matabuena and Ryley Chang 6-0 at line two.
Simon Kuszynski and
Hembo Mathiasen locked in their first No. 1 victory as a pair, beating Aidan Rooney and Alexander Kinoshita 6-2 at the top spot. On court three, freshman
Hayden Elliott and senior transfer
Kristian Peev notched the first victories of their PSU careers. The duo finished off doubles play with a 6-1 win over Dawson Hose and Jonathan Nguyen.
The Vikings jumped out to a quick start in singles action, sailing to wins on courts two, four, six and three. Kuszynski and Elliott both won 6-2, 6-0 at lines four and six, respectively. Mathiasen followed their lead, finishing off Ngyuen 6-2, 6-1 on court two. Theriault rattled off his second decisive win of the weekend, topping Rooney 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3.
Meanwhile, Pacific's Matabuena challenged
Jan Semerak at the No. 1 spot, posting a 6-4 win in the first set. However, Semerak swiftly recovered to win 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (3). Zuellig capped the sweep for the Vikings on court five with a 6-3, 7-5 (5) victory over Hose.
The Vikings will return to action next weekend against the University of Portland. They'll travel across the river on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. to take on the Pilots at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
