Vikings Fall to Portland, 5-2

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland State men's tennis team fell 5-2 to the University of Portland on Saturday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The defeat dropped the Vikings' record to 2-2, while Portland improved to 2-1.

The Vikings demonstrated their strong potential in doubles action on Saturday, securing the opening point over the Pilots.

Simon Kuszynski and Hembo Mathiasen clinched a 6-4 win over Oscar Brown and Stefan Skobelev at line two, followed by Hubert Theriault and Luka Jovanovic sealing the point with a 6-4 win against Nicolas Ocana and Maxim Groysman on court three. At No. 1, Andrea Brignacca and Jan Semerak nearly pulled out the doubles sweep for Portland State but fell in a tight 7-5 battle with Luka Vukovic and Nikolas Tvedt.

The Pilots quickly gained control in singles, claiming five straight-set victories. Brignacca pushed Ocana to a first-set tiebreak but ultimately fell 7-6 (3), 6-2 at line two. Theriault battled against Groysman at the four spot, nearly forcing a third set before falling 6-2, 7-5. Jovanovic concluded the day with a nail-biting victory at line six, improving his record to 3-0 on the season. The sophomore sent the Vikings home on a high note with a 7-6 (3), 7-5 win over Tvedt.

Looking ahead, the Vikings will face Oregon and George Fox in their return to action next weekend. They'll take on the Ducks in Eugene on Saturday, Feb. 17 (5 pm), followed by a home match against GFU on Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center (10 am).
