PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State track & field program doubled up its meets this weekend. It's only appropriate, then, that a handful of Vikings doubling up at Sunday's Portland Indoor Two take center stage at the Chiles Center.
Â
Noah Meucci doubled back from Saturday's meet, where he posted a top 10 mark in the weight throw, to post a top 10 mark in the shot put. Meucci launched a throw of 44-02.00 (13.46m) on his fifth attempt of the day. That's 15 inches better than Meucci's mark Saturday, which had been an overall best for Meucci in the shot put. The mark also moves Meucci up to ninth all-time in the indoor shot put at Portland State.
Â
Abdi Ibrahim, meanwhile, doubled up his events Sunday, doing so with an impressive back-to-back in the men's 3,000 meters and mile. Ibrahim, who had been dealing with an injury over the previous few weeks, opened the day with a time of 8:49.61 in the 3k. It wasn't a personal best for Ibrahim, but it did place him third in Sunday's race.
Â
Ibrahim then returned to the track only a few minutes later for the very next event on the men's side, the mile. He placed sixth overall in 4:24.27 in what was his first-ever indoor mile as a Viking. Ibrahim's time would convert down to around 4:04.69 for the 1,500 meters, according to
MileSplit's Conversion Calculator, which would be around his personal best of 4:04.37 that he set last outdoor season.
Â
Ania Kapustka also doubled in the women's 800 and 400 meters Sunday. She ran the 800 first in 2:26.81 before finishing the 400 in 1:04.74. Kapustka's 400-meter time bettered her best as a Viking, which she set on the same track last season.
Â
Ashley Peterson set personal bests in two events while doubling in the 400 and 200 meters. Peterson first finished the 400 in 1:02.62 and then came back to run the 200 in 28.48 seconds.
Â
Outside of those doubling Sunday,
Laura Beghin continued her strong at the start to the indoor season. Beghin ran her first 3k as a Viking, finishing in 10:13.11 to place second overall at the distance. Beghin's personal bests in the 800m, 1k, mile and 3k are now all from the 2023-24 indoor season. Additionally, she ranks fourth all-time in the 1k, having run 3:00.28 at the Portland Indoor One two weeks ago.
Â
Dyllan Newville set a two-second seasonal best in the mile, finishing in 5:54.16. Besides Peterson,
Ahmeah Brown also set an overall personal best in the 400 in 1:02.69.
Â
The Vikings also saw several athletes either make their overall or event debuts Sunday. Beghin was one to make the event debut with her first 3k. Fellow mid-distance runner
Amir Ahmed also ran his first 400-meter race, finishing in 52.12 seconds. But besides those two, women's soccer players
Sienna Higinbotham and
Meg DeVall ran their first 800-meter races as Vikings, finishing in 2:39.60 and 2:43.96, respectively. Fellow soccer players
Elle Frazier and
Liv Frazier also ran their first 400-meter races in 1:04.75 and 1:06.54, respectively.
Â
Higinbotham was making her overall debut for the Vikings' track program Sunday, as was fellow soccer player
Raniyah Burton. Burton ran the 200 meters in 29.27 seconds, placing her second out of five Vikings competing in the 200. Peterson topped the Vikings' group in the event with her finish in 28.48 seconds.
Kiara Van Deusen also bettered her personal best in the 200, finishing in 30.55 seconds.
Alison Calvin-Stupfel and
Carley Strand – both field events usually for the Vikings – made their 200-meter debuts, finishing in 29.97 and 39.49 seconds, respectively.
Â
Three athletes also made their 200-meter debuts on the men's side between
Dieumerci Migani,
Edward Niyongere and
Aleks Braich. They were three of seven Vikings in the event. Niyongere led the group with a time of 23.69 seconds, which is also the top time of any Viking in the 200 meters this season. The time was six-hundredths of a second off his outdoor best in the 200, which he set at 23.63 seconds at last year's OSU High Performance Meet.
Â
GG Nitunga and
Hunter Leeder weren't new to the 200 meters, but instead lowered their times to 24.05 and 24.57 seconds, respectively. Braich ran his first 200-meter race in 24.29 seconds, while Migani, who moved up to sixth all-time in the indoor long jump Saturday, ran his first in 25.21 seconds.
Â
The Vikings will focus on a single meet next weekend, as they head to the Husky Classic, Feb. 9-10, in Seattle, Wash.
