Vikings Fall to Utah State, 6-2

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Portland State softball team dropped its first game of the Lynn Russell Miller Classic on Saturday, falling 6-2 to Utah State at Amy S. Harrison Stadium. The Vikings fell to 0-3, while the Aggies improved to 1-1.

After a solid season-opening outing yesterday, Allicitie Frost got the start in the circle for the Vikings. The Aggies came out firing though, scoring two runs on three hits in their opening at-bat.

With one out and two on in the top of the second, freshman Brooke Subia came through big for the Vikings, scoring Natalia Martinez and Alison Harris with a two-RBI single to knot the game at two.

Utah State retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth before tacking on another pair in the sixth to lock in the 6-2 victory.

Frost, Marisol Gaona and Annie Lemos saw time in the circle for Portland State. The Vikings tallied four hits in the loss while the Aggies notched nine. Subia led the Vikings' offense going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a stolen base.

Portland State will return to action Sunday in a  doubleheader against Utah State (9 am) and UC Riverside (11:30 am) to close out the Lynn Russell Miller Classic.
