RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Portland State softball team split day two of its doubleheader at the Lynn Russell Miller Classic, beating Utah State 3-2 before falling to UC Riverside 8-0. The Vikings finished the weekend 1-4. The Aggies finished 2-2 while the Highlanders were 1-2.
The Aggies opened the scoring with a two-RBI double in the first inning of game one. The Vikings answered in the third, scoring three runs on RBI from
Maddie Thompson,
Paetynn Lopez and
Logan Riggenbach to take the lead. The Vikings held onto the one-run lead for the remainder of the contest, securing their first win of the season 3-2.
Sherreigh Nakoa-Chung earned the win for Portland State, tossing the first complete game of the season. The sophomore allowed eight hits, two earned runs and three walks en route to the win.
Things didn't go the Vikings' way in game two. The highlanders exploded with seven runs In the opening inning before adding one more in the bottom of the second. The Highlanders shut down the Vikings for the remainder of the contest, securing the 8-0 victory.
The Vikings tallied eight hits on the day, five of those coming in the opener.
Maddie Thompson led the way going 3-for-5 at the plate for the Vikings.
Portland State will return to action next weekend with another five-game slate. They'll take on Nevada, Santa Clara, San Jose State and Fordham at the Santa Clara Invite from Feb. 16-18.
