EUGENE, Ore. — Ben Collins capped a standout freshman season at Portland State with a ninth-place finish in the finals of the men's 1,500 meters Sunday at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field.
Â
Collins ran the finals in 3:54.13 Sunday, but posted an even better time in the prelims on Friday. Racing in a PSU singlet, Collins finished the prelims in 3:52.19, setting a new freshman record at Portland State by more than four seconds in the process.
Â
The USATF U20 Outdoor Championships was Collins' second U.S. meet of 2023. He also competed at the USATF U20 Cross Country Championships in January, where he placed 16th in the men's 8k.
Â
The appearance at the USATF Cross Country meet followed a fall season in which Collins set the highest finishes ever by a freshman men's runner at the Big Sky Championships (17th) and NCAA West Regional (56th).
