Following a historic season at No. 1 doubles,
Capu Sanoner and
Masha Ponomareva of the Portland State women's tennis team achieved another first on Wednesday, becoming the only duo in program history to be ranked in the final DI Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, ranking 85th overall.
The computerized rankings were released Wednesday by the ITA, listing the top 90 doubles teams in NCAA DI Women's Tennis as well as the top 125 singles players.
In their first and only season together, Ponomareva, a graduate transfer from the University of North Texas, and Sanoner, a junior, went 14-0 as a pair at the No. 1 spot. The duo tied single-season program records for wins, win percentage and wins at No. 1, while also becoming PSU's first pair to notch an undefeated season (Min. 10 matches played). The two out-scored conference opponents 42-21 during the regular season and led the Big Sky in overall doubles wins, win percentage and wins at the No. 1 spot.
Arguably their most impressive win came early in the season (Jan. 31) when they posted a dominant 6-1 victory over Washington's No. 1 duo Astrid Olsen and Hikaru Sato. The unanimous First Team All-Big Sky selection went 2-0 at the Big Sky Championship Tournament, securing a spot in the final ITA rankings.
While the national ranking is a historic achievement for the program, Ponomareva has been here before. In 2022, the Russian native was listed 76th alongside UNT partner Lucie Devier. Despite Sanoner leading Portland State in nearly every career doubles category, Wednesday's ITA recognition is the first of her career.
