Dom Morganti Becomes First Viking in School History to Score in Men's 10k as Vikings Open Big Sky Outdoor Championships

RESULTS (PDF)

GREELEY, Colo. —
Dom Morganti waited a whole year to run again for the Portland State track & field team. Out of eligibility for the cross country and indoor seasons earlier in the year, Morganti stayed patient. That patience paid off for him Friday as he became the first Viking runner to score in the men's 10k at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships.

Morganti didn't just sneak out a point or two at seventh or eighth, either. The grad transfer finished fourth at Nottingham Field, tying the highest finish by a Viking men's runner in any event longer than the 800 meters.

It was patience that saw him to it. A mile into the race, Morganti found himself third to last. But that was all part of his plan. Morganti didn't move up significantly until the second half of the race. Tenth halfway into the race, Morganti passed four runners between the third and fourth miles, then stayed steady until dropping two more runners over the final mile to finish in 31:24.61.

Morganti's splits looked like a metronome. After three slow laps to start, Morganti stayed within a second of 75 seconds in 17 of the next 20 laps before closing in 72 and 68 seconds over the final two laps.

Alex Solberg also ran the 10k for the Vikings, placing 13th overall in 32:27.21.

Jamie Zamrin scored on the women's side of the 10k Friday. Zamrin became the first Viking to score in the women's 10k since 2019 while placing seventh in 38:12.81. Zamrin was in ninth with three laps to go, more than four seconds behind the No. 8 runner at the time. She passed Northern Arizona's Alexis Kebbe on the penultimate lap, however, then kicked pass Idaho's Nathalia Campos to finish in 38:12.81.

A familiar duo got the Vikings on the scoreboard first earlier in the day. Alex Barbour and Tatum Miller opened the day for the Viking women with a fourth- and eighth-place finish, respectively, in the women's 3k steeplechase.

The pair were with the leaders with 1,200 meters to go before Idaho's Katja Pattis and Weber State's Bailey Wall separated themselves from the field. Barbour held on for fourth with a time of 11:10.86, while Miller placed eighth in 11:24.55.

Jordan MacIntosh set himself to potentially score tomorrow as he advanced to the final of the men's 1,500 meters on time. MacIntosh missed out on an auto bid by just five-hundredths of a second, but still comfortably picked up a time qualifier with his finish in 4:02.64.

Cam McChesney also competed in the prelims of the men's 1,500 meters, but failed to advance to Saturday's final. McChesney placed 16th overall in the prelims with a time of 4:09.31.

The Vikings also saw three runners advance to the finals of the women's 1,500 meters. The race was originally supposed to have prelims Friday, but when two runners scratched before the race, the remaining 15 runners advanced straight to Saturday's final.

Bára Stýblová advanced on time out of the prelims of the women's 800 meters. Running the second of four heats, Stýblová was third at the bell, then pushed up to second with 300 meters to go. She made a move to narrow the gap between her and leader Annika Reiss of Northern Arizona, but couldn't make up the 25-30-meter gap and finished in 2:12.90. Stýblová finished with the third fastest time across all heats on the day, despite placing second in her heat behind Reiss.

Laura Beghin and Natalia Martino also ran the prelims of the 800 meters Friday, though they did not advance to Saturday's final. Beghin finished 17th overall in 2:20.76, while Martino placed 20th overall in 2:21.47.

Wendy Hare narrowly missed advancing to the finals of the women's 400-meter hurdles. She finished ninth overall, one spot out of qualifying, in 1:04.68. Hare appeared to be out of sync early in the race, but then got her stride back over the final 250 meters and pushed to finish fourth in her heat. The qualifying spots went to the top two in each heat and the next six fastest times, however, and the first heat had five runners finish ahead of Hare's time.

Ahliah Nordstrom didn't score for the Vikings Friday, but she still set a seasonal best while placing 16th overall in the shot put. Nordstrom finished with a best throw of 38-02.25 (11.64m), surpassing her previous best this season of 37-07.25 (11.46m) from the Larry Byerly L&C Invite on April 15.

The Vikings will continue at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships Saturday, when every event will be a final. Nordstrom opens the day with the women's hammer at 8:30 a.m. PT / 9:30 a.m. MT. The Vikings will open events on the track at 1:35 p.m. PT / 2:35 p.m. MT with the finals of the women's 1,500 meters.

NEWBERG, Ore. —
Edward Niyongere took part in three different field events as the lone Viking competing Friday at the first day of the Portland Distance Carnival.

Niyongere set two more personal bests for himself, leaving him with new bests in five different events this season. Niyongere opened the day with one of his new personal bests, as he won the high jump with a clearance at 6-02.75 (1.90m). He cleared on his first or second attempts at five straight bars before missing all three attempts at 6-04.75 (1.95m).

Niyongere set another personal best for himself in the triple jump later in the day. After an opening foul, Niyongere jumped 42-06.00 (12.95m) on his second attempt of the day, surpassing his previous best by over five inches.

Niyongere had twice set personal bests in the long jump earlier in the season, and was near his best again Friday. After two opening fouls, Niyongere came up with a clutch jump of 21-06.75 (6.57m) on his third attempt to make the finals. He then added a couple inches by going 21-08.75 (6.62m) on his fourth attempt, topping out there to place sixth in the competition. The mark didn't surpass Niyongere's best of 22-01.00 (6.73m) from last week's Linfield Open, but it does represent his second-best jump of the season.

The Vikings continue at the Portland Distance Carnival Saturday, starting with the men's 4x100-meter relay at 3:45 p.m.
