Portland State Men's Basketball has signed Ismail Habib to a grant-in-aid agreement for the 2023-24 basketball season.
Habib, a point guard from South Plains College in Levelland, TX, is the 43
rd-ranked player from the JC ranks according to jucorecruiting.com. The 6-foot Habib averaged 11.5 points, 3.5 assists and 3.7 rebounds for the Texans as a freshman.
"Ismail comes from a traditional power in the junior college ranks at South Plains," said Vikings Coach
Jase Coburn. "We've had quite a few guys from that league that have been really successful here. Ish is very talented and can really push the ball up the floor. He adds to our team speed and that allows us to play the way we want to play. He is a tough, physical defender with a lot of athleticism.
"Ish can really shoot the ball, and we wanted to add shooting as well as ball-handling to our team."
Originally from Chicago, Habib played three seasons at Lincoln Park High School, then attended Bishop Walsh School in Maryland. He was 3
rd team All-State in Illinois as a junior, averaging 22.7 points, four rebounds and five assists per game. Habib originally signed at UTRGV of the Western Athletic Conference in 2021-22, but did not play there.
Habib is the second signee to the Viking program for 2023-24. The Vikings return nine letter winners and one redshirt from 2022-23. All-Conference point guard
Cameron Parker's eligibility is completed, as well as senior
Mikal Starks, leaving a need at the lead guard position for PSU.
