FARMINGTON, Utah – Portland State women's tennis player
Masha Ponomareva has been named the Big Sky Player of the Week following an undefeated weekend against Idaho and Eastern Washington, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Ponomareva has been dominant for the Vikings, going 8-0 in the final four matches of the regular season. She finished the Big Sky slate with a 6-1 record at No. 1 singles and notched an undefeated, 12-0 season alongside No. 1 doubles partner,
Capu Sanoner. The duo led the conference in overall win percentage and wins at No. 1.
The Russia native picked up the first Big Sky weekly honor of her career after her second consecutive 4-0 weekend at the No. 1 position. In singles action, she posted back-to-back 6-3, 6-3 wins over Idaho's Annabel Davis and EWU's Scout Mathews. In doubles, she and Sanoner completed their perfect season with a pair of 6-4 victories over UI's Lena Beckx and Davis and EWU's Mathews and Isabella Foshee.
After the winningest regular season since 2014, Ponomareva and the Vikings will head to Phoenix, Ariz. next week for the Big Sky Championship Tournament as the three seed (April 27-29).
