Vikings Open Conference Play With Back-to-Back Run-Rule Victories

HILLSBORO, Ore. - Portland State's softball team put all of the pieces together in its conference opener on Saturday, winning 12-4 and 9-1 over Montana at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex. The Vikings improved to 11-16, while the Grizzlies dropped to 6-25.

The Vikings piled on the runs in game one. Olivia Dean opened the scoring in the first inning, scoring on a passed ball to give Portland State its first lead of the day. The Vikings tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Dean and an RBI double from Paetynn Lopez. The Vikings used a pair of wild pitches and a Grizzly error to extend their lead to 11 in the third.

Facing Olivia Grey in the circle, Montana finally broke through in the fourth, scoring two runs on two hits. Montana continued to chip away at the lead in the top of the fifth, keeping themselves alive by cutting the deficit to 11-4. Emily Johansen secured the 12-4 run-rule win for the Vikings, scoring Maddie Thompson with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.

Grey improved to 6-4 in the circle with her fifth complete game of the season. The redshirt junior tossed five innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs. Portland State edged the Grizzlies in hits, 7-6. Hitting one and two in the lineup, Dean and Johansen combined for five of those seven hits.

The Vikings didn't skip a beat in game two, capitalizing on a Montana error in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Knocking her first hit of the day, Bailee Noland extended the lead to three with a two-out RBI single in the second inning. The Vikings added to their lead once again in the third after 2 RBI from Maddie Thompson and back-to-back sacrifice flies from Johansen and Noland.

After a Montana home run in the top of the fifth pushed another frame, Emily Johansen finished things off for Portland State in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to seal the deal.

Allicitie Frost was stellar on the mound, holding the Grizzlies to three hits and one earned run in her complete-game victory.

The Vikings will look to complete the series sweep against the Grizzlies on Sunday at Gordon Faber Field (noon).
