HILLSBORO, Ore. - Unphased by the rainy conditions, the Portland State softball team rolled past Pacific (Ore.) 10-2 for its third straight win on Tuesday afternoon at Hillsboro Stadium. Rain canceled game two of Tuesday's doubleheader in the third inning. The Vikings improved to 9-16 as they head into conference action this weekend, while the Boxers dropped to 4-15 on the year.
For the first time since Feb. 26,
Olivia Grey took the circle for the Vikings, and she made the most of it. The junior struck out seven of nine batters she faced over three innings, including her first six.
Annie Lemos finished what Grey started, taking things over in the circle at the beginning of the fourth inning to help secure the mercy-rule win.
The Vikings tallied ten hits during the opening two innings to take a 9-0 lead.
Paetynn Lopez knocked in the first run of the day, singling home
Olivia Dean to give the Vikings the lead. Feeding off Grey's energy in the circle, PSU's offense exploded in the bottom of the second as six different Vikings recorded an RBI in the frame. Holding a 6-0 lead,
Natalia Martinez topped off the inning with a three-run shot to center field to put PSU on top 9-0.
An inning later,
Trinity Holden notched her second RBI of the afternoon, scoring
Emily Johansen to extend the Vikings' lead to double-digits. Pacific strung together four hits in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs to cut into the Vikings' lead. A three up, three down fifth inning from Lemos secured the mercy-rule victory for the Vikings.Â
Portland State tallied eleven hits in the win. Five Vikings recorded multi-hit games, while six notched at least one RBI.
The Vikings will look to extend their win streak this weekend as they open Big Sky action against Montana at Gordon Faber Field. The Vikings and Grizzlies will open the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 1 (1:00 p.m.), followed by a single game on Sunday, April 2 (noon).
