PORTLAND, Ore. – For the second time this season, the Portland State men's tennis team took on the University of Portland, falling 7-0 to the Pilots on Saturday at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The Vikings dropped to 5-5 while UP improved to 5-3.
Despite dropping the opening point, the Vikings' only victory of the afternoon came in doubles action. Following a UP victory on court two, Andrea Brignacca and Luka Jovanovic picked up their sixth victory of the season at the No. 3 spot, 6-3 over Fabian Gusic and Maxim Groysman. Shortly after, the Pilots clinched the point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
Coming off a match-clinching victory over Idaho State last weekend, Jonas Hembo Mathiasen was the only Viking to push a third set against the Pilots. The Denmark native came back from a close 7-6 loss in set one, taking the second set 6-1. Playing at No. 4, Mathiasen was unable to complete the comeback effort as he dropped the match tiebreak 10-3, falling to Groysman. The Pilots earned straight-set wins on the remaining five courts to secure the 7-0 sweep.
Portland State will return to action on Monday, Feb 27 when they host Northern Arizona at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center (noon).
