BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Portland State men's tennis team handed Northern Arizona its first doubles loss of the season on Monday, but couldn't overcome the Lumberjacks in singles action, falling 6-1 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. The Vikings dropped to 5-6 overall (1-2 BSC), while NAU improved to 8-1 (1-0 BSC).
The Vikings had an energy-filled start, putting on an impressive doubles performance. After falling on court number three, the Vikings battled back with a pair of wins to secure the opening point. On court two,
Simon Kuszynski and
Jonas Hembo Mathiasen defeated Piotr Galus and Alex Groves 6-4, before
Jan Semerak and
Gregory Gruenig edged Dominik Buzonics and Maikel De Boes, 7-5 at the No. 1 spot.Â
Needing three singles wins to clinch the dual, Portland State put themselves in position to do so, pushing three of six matches to a third set. NAU took a 3-1 lead after wins at No. 1, 2 and 5.
Luka Jovanovic and Kuszynski both fought back from first-set losses to push their opponents to a third set. Playing at No. 3 singles, Jovanovic was outlasted by De Boes 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, while Kuszynski fell short against Dani Torres 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at court six. Mathiasen was the only Viking to pull off a first-set win but couldn't hang on, dropping his match 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4.Â
The Vikings will rest next weekend before returning to action on March 10-11 against Seattle (10 a.m.) and Weber State (2 p.m.) at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.Â
