Wendy Hare Improves in All Five Events of Pentathlon on First Day of Big Sky Indoor Championships

RESULTS (PDF)

MOSCOW, Idaho —
5-for-5. A perfect line. That's what Wendy Hare threw down Thursday, as she set pentathlon bests in all five events of the pentathlon on the first day of the Big Sky Indoor Championships at the Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center.

You can't ask for anything more from a multi-event athlete than that.

Hare's perfect run through the pentathlon saw her finish 13th overall with 3,186 points. That's 409 points more than she scored in her first pentathlon at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open on Jan. 20 earlier this season. Her total Thursday moved her up to 10th all time in the pentathlon, and she's still only completed two pentathlons in her career.

Hare improved by more than 100 points in three of the five events, including the first two of the day Thursday. She opened up with a time of 9.27 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, scoring 854 points – 112 more than she scored at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open. Her biggest improvement came in the high jump where she scored 140 points more than she did last time while pushing her mark up five inches with a clearance at 4-10.50 (1.49m). She improved by 107 points in the long jump, adding close to 14 inches to her mark with a best jump of 16-07.25 (5.06m).

Hare didn't exactly slouch in the other two events, either. Hare improved her mark on all three attempts in the shot put, topping out at 23-00.00 (7.01m) on her third attempt. That was more than two feet farther than she finished at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open, where her best mark was 20-09.75 (6.34m).

It would have been tough for Hare to improve by more than 100 points in the 800 meters, as she set the Portland State pentathlon record in the event the first time around. Even still, Hare bettered her previous mark while winning the 800 by more than two seconds in 2:20.99.

Hare is scheduled to return to the track tomorrow night, as she'll run the 400-meter leg on the women's Distance Medley Relay team. That comes at 7:45 p.m. Friday. The day opens more than three hours earlier for the Vikings, as Gabrielle Bartlett competes in the finals of the women's pole vault at 4:30 p.m.
