PORTLAND, Ore. - Playing its second match in less than 24 hours, the Portland State men's tennis team lost its weekend finale 7-0 to Portland on Saturday afternoon at Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The Vikings fell to 1-3 while the Pilots improved to 2-1 overall.
Having won its first dual of the season on Friday, Portland State was hoping to carry its momentum into Saturday's match. The Pilots proved too much for the Vikings, getting off to an early start with a pair of doubles wins to secure the opening point. Jan Semerak and Gregory Gruenig were nearing their second-straight victory at the No. 1 spot before their match was called.
Two Vikings pushed their Pilot opponents to a third set in singles play but were unable to pull off victories. Brignacca pulled out a close 6-7 (4) first set victory over 47th ranked Sema Pankin at the No. 1 spot before dropping the following two sets 6-1. Gruenig battled back from a 6-3 first set loss at the No. 5 position with a 6-7 (5) win in set two. The freshman later fell in a tight 13-11 tiebreaker.
The Vikings will return to action on Friday, Feb. 3 against William Jessup at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center (10am).
