BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Portland State men's tennis team picked up its first victory of the 2023 season on Friday, defeating Lewis & Clark 7-0 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
The Vikings improved to 1-2 while the Pioneers fell to 0-1 on the season.
The Match opened with three-straight wins from PSU to secure the opening point. Six Vikings earned the first doubles wins of their careers in the process.
Jonas Hembo Mathiasen and
Simon Kuszynski got things started with a 6-0 win on court three.
Jan Semerak and
Gregory Gruenig earned a 6-1 win at the top court, while
Andrea Brignacca and
Luka Jovanovic did the same at the No. 2 spot.
Six straight-set wins by the Vikings in singles play clinched the sweep. Gruenig improved to 2-1 on the year with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Wade McDermott at the No. 5 spot. Freshmen
Luka Jovanovic picked up the first singles win of his collegiate career with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Alberto Dos Santos on court 4. Victories from Brignacca (6-2, 6-2), Semerak (6-2, 6-0), Mathiasen (6-1, 6-4) and
Andrin Zuellig (7-5, 6-0) capped off the win for PSU.
The Vikings will return to action Saturday morning against Portland at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center (10 am).
