MOSCOW, Idaho — Chase Lovercheck could make head coach
David Hepburn look like a genius by the end of the season.
Before the start of the year,
Hepburn said he would run Lovercheck earlier and more often this season in order to prepare him as best he could for the Big Sky Indoor Championships in February. A week ago, that resulted in two personal bests in his first two races of the season at the UW Indoor Preview. Saturday, it saw Lovercheck become just the second Viking ever to run sub-80 seconds in the 600 meters.
Lovercheck finished in 1:19.73 at the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open Saturday at the Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center. Lovercheck's time ranks him second only to Nate Boyer (1:19.48) in the PSU record book. Boyer set that record in 2006, giving Lovercheck the program's fastest 600-meter time in 17 years.
An 800-meter specialist, Lovercheck's 600-meter time Saturday would convert to around 1:50.03 in the 800 meters. Lovercheck's indoor best in the 800 is just 1:54.27, but he set his outdoor best at 1:49.51 – his first natural sub-1:50 800 – at last summer's Portland Track Festival.
Wendy Hare returned to the track in the 60-meter hurdles Saturday after yesterday's pentathlon. Hare bettered her time from a day ago in the hurdles, finishing in 9.51 seconds to place 13th overall.
Ahliah Nordstrom, meanwhile, improved upon her results in the shot put last week, winning her flight with a best mark of 37-04.50 (11.39m). That was more than 40 inches better than her mark last week at the UW Indoor Preview, where she threw 33-11.25 (10.34m).
The Vikings head back to Portland for another meet Sunday, the Portland Indoor One, at the University of Portland's Chiles Center. Events start at 12 p.m.
