PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State women's basketball team completed its roster ahead of the 2022-23 season Friday
with the signing of
Century "Cinco" McCartney.
McCartney, a 5-11 small forward, spent the past three seasons at Northeastern University, though she did not play during the 2020-21 COVID-altered season. McCartney saw her most extensive action last season when she made 23 appearances, including three starts at the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) at the end of the season. McCartney averaged 2.7 points and 4.1 rebounds per game during the 2021-22 season while averaging 14.7 minutes per contest.
McCartney grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in Northeastern's WBI game against Davidson on March 19 last season. McCartney also scored a career-high eight points to go with seven rebounds in only 17 minutes of action in an 81-70 win over The College of Charleston on Jan. 26.
"Century brings experience, strength, athleticism, and grit to our roster. She's a versatile player who will make an immediate impact with her overall physicality and ability to rebound the basketball," head coach
Chelsey Gregg said of McCartney. "Away from the floor she will bring maturity to our youthful roster and fit in seamlessly with our culture."
As a high school player, McCartney earned all-league and all-state honors at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, Conn., where she played for three years. She helped lead Holy Cross to a league title and a state quarterfinal appearance during her time at the school. McCartney also played two years at The Ogburn School in Fernandina Beach, Fla., where she was named her team's MVP.
McCartney played for the Exodus NYC AAU team, winning a tournament championship during her time with the team.
The addition of McCartney gives the Vikings 15 players for the 2022-23 season. That total includes six newcomers between freshmen
Alani Encinas,
Brooklyn Strandy and
Kiana Yesiki, and transfers
Sofía Llanos, Paige Winter and McCartney.
The Vikings' 2022-23 conference schedule was announced in
early July. The team's non-conference slate will be released in the coming weeks.
