Vikings Struggle against Pepperdine's Length in 59-43 Loss in Season Opener

The Portland State women's basketball team made their 2026-27 debut in a 59-43 loss against Pepperdine Monday.

"I was happy with a lot of things," said head coach Karlie Burris. "We had a really good first quarter. We're not in panic mode whatsoever. I just think there's a lot of growth and learning that needs to happen."

The Vikings (0-1) had a strong first quarter, outscoring the Waves 14-13, eight of which were scored from turnovers. The Waves (1-0) picked up momentum in the second and third, however, and it was enough to gain a significant 44-24 lead over the Vikings going into the final quarter.

Portland State didn't give up, though, winning the fourth quarter, 19-15. Out of the Vikings' 43 total points, 47% of them were from turnovers. On Pepperdine's side, they demonstrated their length, scoring 40 of their 59 from the paint.

"I wasn't mad at our defense," said Burris. "We did what we were supposed to do, for the most part. We gave up some easy ones, but we just have to put the ball in the hole."

Every Viking who played tonight scored at least three points. Laynee Torres-Kahapea and Kirstine Munk both played a fast and physical game, and Teagan Colvin led the team in points with a career high of 12. Colvin added eight rebounds and three assists to her 12 points. Munk tied Colvin for the team lead with eight rebounds to go with her seven points.

"I really liked Teagan's effort," said Burris. "She fought the entire game, which I can appreciate. We're going to rely really heavily on her. She did a good job of battling the whole time through. We're going to need a little bit more of that grit and that fight. I think we have a lot to build on."

A positive stat line for the Vikings came in the turnover battle. They were +8 (18-10) on the Wave Monday, which they turned into a 21-6 advantage in points off turnovers. That's a sign of growth for a Portland State team that lost the turnover battle in 23 of their 31 games last season. The Vikings' best turnover margin last season was +6 against Willamette on Nov. 11.

The Vikings hit the road to take on Boise State next on Friday, Nov. 6, at 5:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. MT.
