The dawn of a new college football season brings a slight change to Portland State Football as the Vikings will have a new practice time for 2022. PSU begins preseason practice on Wednesday, August 3, at 10:15 a.m. The new 10:15-12:45 practice time slot differs from the past several years' early morning practice schedules.
 
Regardless of practice time, the Vikings have the same goal for the month of August: getting ready and getting better for the 2022 football season. The Vikings come off a 5-6 campaign in 2021, 4-4 in the Big Sky Conference. PSU returns 44 letterwinners from that team, eight starters on offense, nine on defense and two on special teams.
 
In 2022, Portland State will be led by a deep and talented receiving corps featuring SR WR Beau Kelly, who led the Big Sky in receptions, yards and touchdowns during the regular season, SR WR Mataio Talalemotu, and SO WRs Darien Chase and Nate Bennett. On defense, SR CB All-American Anthony Adams returns as does SR DE VJ Malo, who comes off a season with 20 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks, and SO LB Parker McKenna who led the team in tackles.
 
Key positions where PSU will need to bring along newcomers include quarterback and defensive tackle. Former quarterback Davis Alexander has graduated and is now playing in the CFL, while nose tackle Semise Kofe, a two-year starter, has also graduated. SO QB Dante Chachere is the leading candidate behind center among a large group of young signal callers. SR TR EJ Ane, formerly of San Jose State, is expected to play a major role at tackle and is among a handful of players vying for time in the middle. In all, PSU has eight Division I transfers into the program this season.
 
Ironically, Ane will see his former team soon as Portland State opens the 2022 season with a non-conference game at San Jose State on Sept. 1.
