June Jones -- Portland State All-American and Hall of Famer -- Passes Away at 73

Portland State Athletics mourns the passing of All-American and Hall of Fame football player and coach June Jones. He was 73.

A record-breaking quarterback in the Vikings' innovative run-and-shoot offense under head coach Mouse Davis, Jones helped lead Portland State to the program's first eight-win seasons as they finished 8-3 in 1975 and 1976. Jones broke the NCAA Division II single-season records for passing yards (3,518) and total offense (3,463) as the Vikings led the nation in both categories.

Jones established six new Portland State career records in his two years as a Viking while throwing for 5,798 yards and 41 touchdowns. He was a first-team American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-American in 1976, and later inducted into the Portland State Hall of Fame in 1998.

Jones went on to play in the NFL and served as a longtime coach in college, the CFL and NFL. He's the winningest coach in program history at Hawai'i, where he had also been a player. He led the Rainbow Warriors from 1999 to 2007, including a 12-0 regular-season record and a Sugar Bowl appearance in 2007. He was inducted into the Hawai'i Circle of Honor in 2024.

Jones played for Grant High School in Portland where he graduated in 1971. He was an All-City player in football, basketball and baseball, and second-team all-state in basketball. He was inducted into the Portland Interscholastic League Hall of Fame in 1991.
