Camarena to Run 1,500 Meters at USATF Outdoor Meet; MacIntosh, Marcil Set for Steeplechase at Canadian Championships

EUGENE, Ore. — Katie Camarena already made the national stage during the collegiate cross country and indoor track & field seasons. This weekend, she'll add a third national stage to her resume, this time on the professional level, as she races in the women's 1,500 meters at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Camarena will be one of three Vikings or former Vikings in action this week at their respective national meets. While Camarena races at the USATF meet, Jordan MacIntosh and Jalen Marcil will compete in the men's and women's steeplechase, respectively, at the Bell Canadian Track & Field Championships at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley, B.C. MacIntosh will run in the senior/open section of the men's steeplechase, while Marcil will run in the U20 section of the women's steeplechase.

Camarena faces two rounds of competition, potentially, in the women's 1,500 meters. The first round of the event comes Thursday, June 23, at 6:53 p.m. (PT). If she advances, then Camarena will race in the final at 1:40 p.m. (PT) Saturday, June 25.

MacIntosh and Marcil only face one round of competition, and both of their races will take place Friday, June 24. Marcil will race in the U20 women's steeplechase at 7:45 p.m. (PT) Friday, while MacIntosh will race in the senior men's steeplechase at 8:30 p.m. (PT).

Camarena qualified for the women's 1,500 meters after setting a personal best of 4:10.26 at the Portland Track Festival on June 11. The qualifying standard for the USATF meet was 4:05.70, but only 13 athletes who have declared for the meet have met that standard. That left room for runners like Camarena, who were without the qualifying standard. All told, 36 athletes will run in the first round of the women's 1,500 meters Thursday.

MacIntosh easily met the qualifying standard for the men's steeplechase at the Canadian meet. The standard was 9:10.00, and MacIntosh ran 8:44.25 in his first-ever steeplechase at the Portland Distance Carnival on May 14. He ran nearly an identical time at the Portland Track Festival on June 10, finishing in 8:44.51. MacIntosh competed as an unattached runner at both of those meets, but will be in a PSU singlet this weekend.

Marcil met the U20 qualifying standard (11:50.00) in the women's steeplechase after finishing her first-ever steeplechase in 11:48.35 at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 14.

Portland State volunteer assistant coach Colleen Quigley will run in the women's steeplechase at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships. She'll compete in the first round of the competition Friday at 6:05 p.m. (PT) and the final Sunday at 2:23 p.m. (PT), should she advance.

Portions of the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships will be broadcast on NBC. If Camarena and Quigley advance to their respective finals on Saturday and Sunday, then their finals will be part of the NBC broadcast windows on each day.
