FARMINGTON, Utah – Following a vote of the league's head coaches, six Portland State softball players were named to All-Big Sky Conference teams, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
For just the second time in program history, the Vikings brought home three first-team selections in Olivia Grey, Logan Riggenbach, and Paetynn Lopez. A second team honor went to Olivia Dean, while Emily Johansen and Mariah Rodriguez were Honorable Mention selections.
Grey, a 2021 Honorable Mention pick, notched her first-career first team nod after a phenomenal season in the circle. With a 17-6 overall record and a 6-4 mark against conference opponents, the Woodland, Wash. native threw seven complete games during conference action, finishing the regular season with a 2.05 ERA (3.06 BSC). Grey led the Big Sky in total strikeouts (197), recording 79 in league contests while holding conference foes to a .204 average at the plate. Grey was the second pitcher in program history to earn three Big Sky weekly nods in a single season.
Also a 2021 Honorable Mention selection, Lopez was named a first-team All-Big Sky catcher. The Sophomore hit .279 overall and .239 in conference action, totaling eight home runs and 25 RBIs on the season. The Chehalis, Wash. native was rock solid behind the dish, logging just one error in 244 chances for a .996 fielding percentage.
Riggenbach rounded out the first team accolades following a standout sophomore season with the Vikings. The Salinas, Calif. native hit an astounding .518 in Big Sky action, recording a .982 slugging percentage with 26 RBIs and six home runs. Riggenbach's .394 season average ranked second in the Big Sky. The left fielder completed the regular season with a 1.000 fielding percentage, remaining perfect through 66 putouts.
Dean claimed the first second team shortstop honor of her career after being named an Honorable Mention in 2021. The speedy leadoff finished Big Sky play with a .289 batting average after reaching base in 16-straight contests. The redshirt junior was 19-21 on stolen base attempts, ranking second in the conference.
Johansen was named Honorable Mention All-Big Sky for the second-straight season. The first baseman hit .357 in Big Sky competition, totaling six home runs and 15 RBIs. Johansen batted .313 on the season and tallied a .467 on-base percentage, which ranks third in the conference. The Tualatin, Ore., native was perfect defensively in Big Sky contests, recording 78 putouts and two assists without committing an error.
Rodriguez capped off the honors as a first-time Honorable Mention Utility selection. The Sophomore appeared in 14 of 15 Big Sky games, hitting .308 with two home runs. An asset in the infield, Rodriguez posted 14 putouts and six assists at second base during conference action.
Portland State heads into the Big Sky Championship Tournament this week as the three seed after going 26-16 overall and 10-5 in Big Sky play. They'll begin their tournament run on Wednesday in Ogden against sixth-seeded Montana (11 am PT).
