BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Portland State men's tennis team rallied to four wins in singles action to defeat Eastern Washington 4-3 on Friday at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center.
The Vikings jumped to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in conference action, while EWU fell to 2-9 and 0-5 against Big Sky opponents.
The Eagles began the day with a pair of doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to secure the 1-0 lead.
Sam De Vries knotted the match at one after sailing to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Erik Saralvik at No. 4.
Tommy Hsu was the next Viking to claim a victory, defeating Jeremy Mueller in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) on court two. The Eagles responded quickly, winning matches at No. 5 and 6 to regain the lead at 3-2.
Oliver Richards and
Nils Plutat were left with the deciding points. After a 6-2 win in the opening set, Richards battled Manuel Balce in a tight second set to pull off a 6-2, 7-5 win. As the attention shifted to a third-set thriller at No. 1, Plutat buckled down and erased a 4-1 deficit in the final set to outlast Wout Doumen 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-5 and clinch the first Big Sky win of the year for Portland State.

The Vikings will look to ride their momentum into tomorrow as they take on Montana State at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center (2 p.m.).
