RIVERSIDE, Calif. -Â The Portland State softball team capped off a successful opening weekend with an 8-2 win over Utah Valley at the Lynn Russell Miller Classic on Sunday.
The Vikings finished the weekend 4-1. The loss dropped the Wolverines to 1-3 overall.
Shea Garcia and Paetynn Lopez got things started for the PSU, each tacking on RBIs in the opening inning of action. Emily Johansen added to the lead after stealing home on a wild pitch. The Wolverines responded with two runs in the second, cutting the Viking's lead down to one.
Clinging to a one-run lead, Portland State's bats came alive in the fifth. Natalia Martinez, Mariah Rodriguez and Alexa Cepeda combined for four RBIs to put the Vikings ahead 7-2 before Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch to cap off the scoring spree. The Wolverines were unable to get a run across in the final innings as the Vikings clinched the 8-2 victory.
Allicitie Frost got the start in the circle for PSU, tossing 2.2 innings before Olivia Grey took things over in the second. Grey finished out the game for the Vikings, giving up just two hits in 4.1 innings of work while improving to 3-0 on the season.
Portland State finished the game with ten hits, four of those coming from Lopez and Maddie Thompson while Cepeda added a team-high two RBIs.
Next week, the Vikings will travel to Phoenix, Ariz. for the Littlewood Classic. They'll kick off the weekend on Friday, Feb. 18, against California (1 p.m.) and No. 21 Arizona State (6 p.m.)
