TEMPE, Ariz. - The Portland State softball team ended its seven-year drought against Pac-12 opponents today, splitting its doubleheader at the Littlewood Classic. The Vikings posted a 7-1 win over Cal in the opener before falling in the nightcap 9-1 to No. 23/21 Arizona State.
The Vikings didn't just beat the Bears - they did it convincingly.Â
Their confidence at the plate was evident in the early going, as they took a 2-0 lead over the Bears in the second inning.Â
Olivia Grey anchored the Viking defense in the circle while a pair of Cal errors and a
Grace Johnson RBI bunt extended their lead to four in the fourth inning. Sophomore
Paetynn Lopez sparked another Viking rally in the fifth with a leadoff home run to begin the inning. Back-to-back singles from
Alexa Cepeda and Johnson were enough to extend the Viking's lead to 6-0.Â
Lopez added her second RBI of the day in the top of the sixth, sending a SAC fly to deep right field, scoring
Olivia Dean from third.
Cal's last-ditch effort, which included a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh, fell short as Grey retired the final three batters to seal the 7-1 victory for the Vikings.Â
Grey was phenomenal in the circle as she improved to 4-0 on the season. The Junior right-hander allowed just four hits through seven innings of work, striking out seven along the way.
The Vikings out-hit Cal 8-4 as Johnson led with a team-high two hits. Â
Portland State failed to find their groove in game two against No.23/21 Arizona State. A four-run first inning by the Sun Devils put the Vikings in a hole early. After giving up three more runs in the second, PSU found some life in the fourth inning but failed to capitalize on a bases-loaded opportunity, bringing just one run across.Â
The Sun Devils put an end to the contest in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run shot to secure the 9-1 win over the Vikings. Dean's leadoff single in the fourth broke up the Sun Devils no-hitter as their pitching staff limited the Vikings to just a single hit.Â
Allicitie Frost tossed 4.1 innings in the contest but
Annie Lemos took the loss in the circle for the Vikings.Â
Portland State returns to action tomorrow for another doubleheader, starting with an 8 a.m. matchup against UTEP followed by a rematch against Cal at 10:30 a.m.
