BEAVERTON, Ore. – Playing its first match in nearly a month, the Portland State men's tennis team fell 5-2 to George Fox on Friday at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center.
The Vikings fell to 0-2 while the Bruins improved to 1-0 to begin their season.
The Bruins clinched an early lead after securing two of three doubles matches. Oliver Richards and Nils Plutat recorded the sole doubles win for PSU, defeating Rox Rogers and Luis Rojas 6-3 at the No. 2 position.
Singles play saw two Vikings earn their first-career singles victories. Sophomore Oliver Richards earned a convincing 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 while De Vries battled his way to a three-set victory over Luis Rojas at No. 4 (6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (3)).
The dual concluded with a battle at the top spot between Plutat and GFU's Will Leach. After exchanging a series of match points, Leach finally broke through, outlasting Plutat in a 14-16 third-set tiebreak.
The Vikings will return to action tomorrow to take on Washington in Seattle (2 p.m.).
