PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State women's tennis team will head to California this week to take on San Diego Christian College on Thursday, Feb. 3 (2 p.m.) and Point Loma on Friday, Feb. 4 (10 a.m.).
The Vikings will head into Thursday's dual against the Hawks after a 1-2 start to the season. Last Friday, PSU suffered a heartbreaking 3-4 defeat against crosstown rival Portland before bouncing back on Saturday to pick up their first win of the season with a. 7-0 sweep of Linfield.
PSU has earned the doubles point in two of their three matches. Leading the group with a perfect 3-0 record are senior Emily Rees and freshman Mariajose Hernandez Coronado at the No. 2 position. The duo has lost just five games, outscoring their opponents 18-5.
Coming off of two-straight wins in doubles play are sophomore Capu Sanoner and freshman Nika Beukers at the No. 1 spot. This past weekend the duo picked up a 6-3 victory over Portland on Friday before capping it off with a dominant 6-1 defeat of Linfield on Saturday.
The Vikings will head into Thursday with nine singles victories under their belt, four of those coming from Rees and Beukers. After opening the season with a three-set loss at Oregon, Beukers has been dominant ever since, knocking off her last two opponents in four straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win against Linfield's Sarah Forester.
The match against Linfield on Saturday was full of firsts. Sophomore transfer Maddie Egan earned her first career victory at No. 1 singles (7-5, 6-1), while Hernandez Coronado notched her first collegiate win 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6. Also finding their groove in their first singles wins of the year were returners Jacinta Milenkoski and Makoto Ohara.
Point Loma
The Sea Lions will open their 2022 campaign on Feb. 2 against Cal State Fullerton, two days before their match against the Vikings. Eight players are returning from a team that went 7-9 last season, including five starters. Curt Wheeler leads them in his eighth season at the helm.
Series History
Saturday will mark just the second meeting between these two teams, the first one occurring a year ago. Point Loma holds a 1-0 series lead, after defeating a shorthanded Vikings team on Mar. 26, 2021, 4-0.
San Diego Christian
On Thursday, the Hawks will open their season against the Vikings, after being ranked No. 17 in the NAIA Preseason Poll. They finished last season with an impressive 12-3 record and sport an experienced roster with five upperclassmen. They are led by third-year head coach Greg Failla.
