THE OPENING TIP
Portland State will seek a victory and a seventh-place finish as it wraps up the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament on Sunday night in a game at the Chiles Center. The Vikings will play Oregon State at 8 p.m. in a game televised on ESPNU.
          Â
The Vikings (2-4) and the Beavers (3-3) met just a week ago in Corvallis with PSU coming away 79-66 winners. It marked the first time that Portland State has beaten Oregon State in men's basketball after numerous close contests and gave the Vikings a rare win over a Pac-12 opponent. Now PSU will try to make it two straight though a group of angry Beavers will no doubt have revenge on their minds. The Vikings and Beavers have never played one another twice in the same season.
          Â
Both PSU and OSU have gone 0-2 in the first two games of the powerhouse PKL Tournament. The Vikings lost to sixth-ranked Gonzaga in their opener, then West Virginia on Friday night. The Beavers took eight-ranked Duke to the wire before losing their opener, then fell to Florida on Friday.
          Â
Oregon State goes into Sunday's game having lost three in a row.
          Â
Portland State's journey through the PKL looks similar to their 2017 participation in the tournament's forerunner - the PK80 Tournament. In that event, PSU lost to top-ranked Duke in the first round, fell to a prominent NCAA program - Butler - in the second round, then took on a Pac-12 team, beating Stanford in the seventh-place game. The Vikings hope for a similar conclusion this year.
          Â
PSU has lost two straight since beating Oregon State. On Friday, the Vikings committed 24 turnovers - twice their season average - in an 89-71 loss to West Virginia. SR G
Cameron Parker led the way with 19 points, but otherwise it was a subpar offensive performance for PSU. For the second straight game a PSU opponent shot 60% from the field.
          Â
Portland State goes into Sunday's game led by JR G
Jorell Saterfield (16.5 ppg) and Parker (15.2 ppg). Saterfield had 26 points in the win at Oregon State last week. JR F
Hunter Woods leads the Vikings in rebounding (6.3) while Parker leads in assists (5.5). Woods had 19 points in the previous meeting with OSU.
          Â
Parker has 984 career points in 115 career games as he enters the contest with Oregon State. He needs 16 points to reach the collegiate milestone of 1,000 in a career.
Â
WE'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE
Portland State appeared in the PK80 Tournament, a forerunner to this year's Phil Knight Legacy Tournament, back in 2017 compiling a 1-2 record. The Vikings put up a game challenge before losing to #1 Duke on Thanksgiving that year. The Vikings led 49-45 at halftime and had a lead as late as 14 minutes remaining but eventually lost 99-81. On the following day, the Vikings had a potential game-winning three-point shot at the buzzer against Butler, but missed and lost 71-69. PSU took down Stanford, 87-78, in the finale of the weekend event.Â
Â
COMING UP
The Vikings' next home games are Nov. 30 vs. Portland Bible (7 p.m.), then Dec. 3 against Air Force (1 p.m.).
          Â
Portland State plays only four non-conference home games, but due to the matchup at UP and the PKL Tournament will play eight non-conference games in the city of Portland.

GAME NOTES: PORTLAND STATE vs. OREGON STATE
- ALL-TIME SERIES: Oregon State leads the all-time series, 16-1. The Vikings are 1-12 all-time at Gill Coliseum... PSU is 1-10 against OSU since reinstating basketball and joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97.
- ABOUT THAT WIN OVER OREGON STATE: Portland State earned one of its better wins in some time with a 79-66 victory at Oregon State last Saturday. Prior to that game, Portland State had never beaten Oregon State, but had been painfully close many times - especially last season when the Vikings led by double digits in the second half. In the previous eight meetings, dating to 1997, seven had been decided by single digits with one outlier blowout in 2011. The other seven games, starting from last season going backward, were decided by 9, 5, 6, 5, 3, 5, and 4. Oregon State won the game in 2002 on a Brian Jackson three-pointer at the buzzer from 35 feet. The Vikings led that one by nine at halftime. So, the win at Oregon State was PSU's version of the "Dam Breaking" against the Beavers.Â
- PORTLAND STATE vs. THE PAC-12 CONFERENCE Portland State is 8-58 all-time against current members of the Pac-12 Conference... PSU has wins over Oregon (2), Arizona State (2), USC (1), Stanford (1), Cal (1) and Oregon State (1) in its history - all coming during PSU's Big Sky Conference era (8-44).
- HERE'S TO OLD FRIENDS: SO F Isaiah Johnson spent the last two seasons at OSU, playing in 32 games for the Beavers. He transferred to PSU over the summer. In last Saturday's win, Johnson came off the bench to play 21 minutes, score six points, grab five rebounds and block a shot.
- COACHES: Vikings Coach Jase Coburn (Arizona State, 2006) is in his second season as Head Coach and is 16-21 overall. Coburn is 1-1 against Oregon State. He spent eight previous seasons on the Park Blocks as an Assistant and Associate Head Coach... the Beavers are coached by Wayne Tinkle (Montana, 2005) in his ninth season. Tinkle has a 119-137 record at Oregon State and is 277-228 in 17 seasons as a collegiate coach... Tinkle is 3-1 against Portland State as an OSU coach, and was 11-6 against the Vikings in eight seasons at Montana.
