THE OPENING TIP
There is no rest for the weary at the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament being played in Portland this week. The Portland State Vikings completed their first-round game against sixth-ranked Gonzaga - a 102-78 loss - just before midnight on Thursday at Memorial Coliseum. Their reward is a Friday evening matchup with West Virginia at Moda Center tipping off at 6 p.m.

The Vikings (2-3) will need to bounce back quickly from a loss to one of the top programs in the nation as they take on West Virginia (4-1) of the Big 12 for the first time in their history. The Mountaineers lost their opening round game to 24th-ranked Purdue, 80-68.

PSU continues its journey in the nation's premier tournament on Sunday. Depending on the outcome of Friday's game, the Vikings will play either Oregon State (whom they defeated last week) or Florida at the Chiles Center at a time to be determined.

The Vikings had their hands full on Thursday with a hot-shooting Gonzaga team. The Bulldogs finished the night hitting .603 from the field, including 12-24 three-pointers, and held a 40-26 rebounding edge.  PSU simply couldn't keep up.

Portland State saw solid performances from JR G Jorell Saterfield who went for 21 points (7-15 FG, 5-8 3-pt, 2-2 FT) and SR G Cameron Parker with 16 points (6-9 FG, 4-5 FT) and eight assists.

Saterfield leads the Vikings in scoring this season (18.2), while Parker leads the team in assists (6.0) while shooting .615 from the field. JR F Hunter Woods comes off the bench for 11.6 points, and team-leading stats of 6.6 rebounds and 2.2 steals.

Saterfield is currently tied for the lead in the Big Sky Conference in scoring. Parker leads the Big Sky in assists.

WE'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE
Portland State appeared in the PK80 Tournament, a forerunner to this year's Phil Knight Legacy Tournament, back in 2017 compiling a 1-2 record. The Vikings put up a game challenge before losing to #1 Duke on Thanksgiving that year. The Vikings led 49-45 at halftime and had a lead as late as 14 minutes remaining but eventually lost 99-81. On the following day, the Vikings had a potential game-winning three-point shot at the buzzer against Butler, but missed and lost 71-69. PSU took down Stanford, 87-78, in the finale of the weekend event.
