HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Portland State women's soccer team posted its third straight shutout on Sunday afternoon, battling Sacramento State to a 0-0 tie at Hillsboro Stadium to remain undefeated in Big Sky action.
The Vikings moved to 3-5-4 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play. Also picking up their fourth tie of the season, the Hornets advanced to 1-7-4 and 1-1-1 in Big Sky action.Â
The Hornets put PSU's defense to the test early, recording eight shots in the opening 45 minutes. Following six unsuccessful attempts in the first half, Portland State came out aggressively after the break. In the 76th minute, freshman
Emma Johnston was inches away from giving Portland State the lead but saw her shot ricochet off the crossbar. The Vikings found their last real opportunity at the 80-minute mark when a free kick from
Sienna Higinbotham missed just above the net. PSU's defense was impressive down the stretch, holding the Hornets to just two shots in the final 35 minutes of action.
Both teams tallied 12 shots, while Sacramento State held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Higinbotham led the Vikings with three shots, putting one on goal. Â
Sidney O'billovich recorded four saves in goal for the Vikings. The Portland, Ore. native is the first PSU goalkeeper to record three-straight shutouts since 2013.Â
The Vikings will return to action next weekend in their final homestand of the season. They'll host Idaho State on Friday, Oct. 7 (1:05 p.m.) before taking on Weber State on Sunday, Oct. 9 (1:05 p.m.).
