SEATTLE, Wash. — We love you, 3000.
A record sweep of the men's and women's 3,000 meters provided a clear highlight for the Portland State track & field program Saturday as the Vikings kicked off their 2022 schedule at the UW Indoor Preview.
Jordan MacIntosh and
Katie Camarena broke the two records for the Vikings, finishing the men's and women's 3,000 meters in 8:07.94 and 9:16.35, respectively.
Camarena set the first record of the day for the Vikings at the Dempsey Indoor facility. A record-breaking performance by Camarena has become routine for the Vikings, as Saturday's 3k record gave Camarena her fifth school record in just over four months competing for the Vikings. In fact, Camarena has run five different distances between the cross country and indoor seasons at Portland State, and she owns the records in all five events.
Camarena finished 20 seconds ahead of the old 3k record that Amber Rozcicha set at 9:36.83 in 2013. Her time of 9:16.35 also moved her up to fifth all-time within Big Sky Conference history, and marked the fastest time by a Big Sky athlete since Amber Henry ran a time of 9:13.81 in 2012.
Additionally, Camarena's time moved her up to 13th nationally in the 3,000 meters this season, putting her – at the moment – within the top 16 that will qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. The top 16 times have typically been faster than Camarena's time Saturday – the 16th-fastest times in 2020 and 2021 were both around 9:07 – but Camarena is now on the qualifying bubble in both the 3k and the 5k. Camarena ranks 17th nationally in the 5k after setting yet another record with her time of 15:51.49 at Boston University's Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener.
MacIntosh ranks 20th nationally in the men's 3k after his record-breaking performance Saturday. His time of 8:07.94 was close to nine seconds faster than Alex Cisneros' previous record of 8:16.45, which Cisneros set on the same track at the 2018 Husky Classic.
Keynan Abdi also dipped under Cisneros' former record, as he finished in 8:14.04 while running in the same heat as MacIntosh. Abdi's time marked a 28-second improvement over his previous indoor best in the 3k, which he set in 2019 when he was competing at Lubbock Christian University.
MacIntosh actually has a faster 3k time under his belt, having run 8:02.60 at the Hawkeye B1G Invitational last season while competing for the University of Minnesota.
Three other Vikings made their 2022 debuts Saturday in
Jordan Gloden,
Chase Lovercheck and
Harley Montgomery. Gloden was the first athlete to the track Saturday, and he also had the busiest day of all the Vikings. Despite the full schedule, Gloden opened his season well with a second-place finish in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles among other finishes.
Gloden ran 8.44 in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles, a time that moved him into a tie for sixth all-time in the event at Portland State. Gloden finished the finals in 8.50 seconds, placing him second overall and putting him as the top collegian at Saturday's meet.
Gloden also placed sixth in the long jump with a best jump of 22-01.75 (6.75m). Additionally, he joined Montgomery in the 200 meters, where he placed 10th in 23.42 seconds.
Montgomery finished ahead of Gloden in the 200 meters, as he placed eighth overall in 23.35 seconds. That came after Montgomery made his Viking debut in the 400 meters, where he finished fourth overall in 51.34 seconds.
Lovercheck opened the distance events for the Vikings, as he ran only his second 1,000-meter race as a Viking Saturday. Lovercheck finished in 2:34.29, exactly a second off his personal best from the 2020 UW Indoor Preview, which ranks third all-time at Portland State.
The Vikings will make a return trip to Seattle in two weeks, as they head back up north for the UW Invitational, Jan. 28-29. The Vikings will stay local next week, as they cross the river for the Portland Indoor Two meet at the University of Portland's Chiles Center next Sunday, Jan. 23.
