MONMOUTH – The Portland State women's soccer team earned its first victory of the season by defeating Western Oregon 2-1 on Friday. The win improved the Vikings to 1-1-0 on the year.
The PSU offense controlled the tempo in the opening ten minutes of action. An early shot attempt from
Sienna Higinbotham and back-to-back looks from Teà Poore put pressure on the WOU defense. After fending off several Viking threats, the Wolves found a way to shift momentum to their side in the 40th minute. A Lizzy Nowatzke goal put WOU on top 1-0 as the first period expired.
A second-period corner kick from
Ani Jensen, whipped in by freshman
Parker Reichner, was all that Portland State needed to tie it at 1-1 in the 54th minute. The Vikings continued to threaten as Jensen capitalized on a loose ball scoring the game-winning goal in the 64th minute.
Viking goalkeeper
Enya Hernandez denied a pair of shot attempts in the final 26 minutes to lock in the Viking victory at 2-1.
PSU fired off 16 shots in the contest, putting nine of those on goal.
Abi Hoffman and Teà Poore each added a pair of shots on goal while four other Vikings ended the afternoon with two shots.
Hernandez finished the contest with six saves. For the second consecutive match, Viking defender
Liz Hansen clocked 90 minutes of work for PSU.
The Vikings will look to add another win as they return to action this Sunday against Gonzaga at Hillsboro Stadium (1 PM).
