The Big Sky Conference has released the conference football schedules for the next three years, shedding light on league matchups for the future. The Big Sky, which will be reduced to 12 football programs when Southern Utah leaves following the 2021 season, had to rework all future schedules.
Teams will have nine weeks to play eight games in each of the 2022, 2023 and 2024 seasons, leaving one bye week.Â
Portland State will open the 2022 Big Sky season at Montana on Sept. 24. The Vikings will return for a conference home opener against Northern Arizona on Oct. 1. Other 2022 home dates for PSU include Weber State, Northern Colorado and Sacramento State. Other road games in 2022 are Idaho, Eastern Washington and Cal Poly.Â
The release of the 2022 schedule puts the Vikings at 10 games scheduled for the season. An 11th game will be added at some point over the next year. The same is true for 2023. In 2024, FCS schools have the opportunity to play 12 games due to an additional weekend prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. PSU currently has 11 games scheduled for that season.
The traditional rival has also been eliminated as PSU is not scheduled to face Eastern Washington in 2024. That would mark the first year the teams have not met in a full season since 1989.
The release of future Big Sky Conference football schedules is part of the Football Kickoff Media Days taking place in Spokane on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.Â
At the Media Days representing PSU, along with Head Coach Bruce Barnum, are senior quarterback Davis Alexander and junior All-American defensive back Anthony Adams. That trio will be featured on Monday during the ESPN+ live broadcast from the Davenport Grand Hotel. The Big Sky's Mariluz Cook will interview coaches and student-athletes from all 13 teams on a broadcast that begins at 9 a.m. Barnum, Adams and Alexander will appear in a 20-minute block, beginning at 11:42 a.m.
The ESPN+ broadcast will be the first by the conference since the Big Sky moved all of its live streaming events to the Worldwide Leader In Sports earlier this summer.
On Saturday, student-athletes take part in a youth football clinic, which is open to all children eighth-grade or younger. Sunday will feature a jam-packed day filled with video interviews and meetings, followed by a dinner that evening where the league's Preseason Outstanding Offensive and Defensive Players will be announced.Â
Monday will feature more than five hours of live coverage on ESPN+ as well as on-site interviews with media covering the conference and Root Sports, the home of the Big Sky Conference Game of the Week. Preseason All-Conference teams and Preseason Polls will also be released on Monday.
