Vikings Shutout Wildcats To Open Series But Fall In Game Two

PORTLAND - The Portland State softball team served Weber State its second conference loss of the season 6-0 in game one on Friday before falling short 4-2 in game two.

The Vikings moved to 11-23 overall and 8-9 in Big Sky action while the Wildcats dropped to 22-15 and 12-2 in Conference play.

Redshirt freshman Olivia Grey was the story in game one, tossing her third complete-game shutout of the year, holding the Wildcat offense to just one hit. Grey held WSU hitless through five innings before giving up the only hit of the contest in the bottom half of the sixth inning.

Marissa Bruno got the Vikings on the board with a solo home run in the third inning to grab the first lead of the afternoon. The left fielder struck again in the fifth driving in Maddie Thompson with an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead. To no surprise, freshman designated hitter Paetynn Lopez came through big with the bases loaded, knocking a three-RBI double to cap off the inning.

Portland State held on to its 5-0 lead before a Rachel Menlove RBI added one more in the seventh.

Olivia Grey remained untouchable in the final frame, locking in the third shutout win for the Vikings in their last four games.

Bruno was a perfect 4-4 in the leadoff spot while seven other Vikings added to the eleven-hit total.

Portland State carried its momentum straight into game two, wasting no time to get on the board. A Wildcat error and an Emily Johansen RBI single put the Vikings on top 2-0 in the first inning.

The game remained quiet for the following four innings as Viking starter Katie Schroeder held the Weber State offense scoreless until the fifth. In search of a comeback, the Wildcats managed to bring a pair of runs across in the fifth to knot things at two. While stunting the Portland State offense, WSU got the job done with its bats in the sixth, taking a 4-2 lead heading into the final frame.

The Vikings were unable to breakthrough in the seventh as Weber State tied the series at one with a 4-2 victory. PSU out-hit the Wildcats 10-9 In the contest. Bruno added a team-high three hits while three other Vikings cashed multi-hit games. Schroeder took the loss in the circle despite being relieved by Allicitie Frost in the sixth.

Portland State will look to clinch its second-straight conference series with a win tomorrow. The Vikings will close out their regular season schedule in a rubber match against the Wildcats at 11 a.m. PT.
