Vikings Drop Game Three Against Weber State 6-3

OGDEN, Utah – The Portland State softball team closed out its regular-season schedule on Saturday, falling to Weber State in the series finale 6-3.

With the win today, the Wildcats earned the series win 2-1, improving to 23-15 overall and 13-2 in conference action. The Vikings ended the regular season at 11-24 and 8-10 in Big Sky play.

Rachel Menlove was the first to strike for Portland State, ripping an RBI double to score Olivia Dean and give the Vikings an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Weber State was hungry in its first at-bat, tallying two hits against Viking starter Allicitie Frost en route to a 2-1 lead.

Emily Johansen wasted no time knotting the game as she belted a leadoff solo home run to open the second inning.

The game remained tied at two until the fourth inning when the Vikings regained the lead after a fielder's choice RBI from Dean.

Weber State answered once again, scoring one run off of Viking reliever Marisol Gaona to knot things at three heading into the fifth inning.

The Wildcats strung together four hits in their half of the fifth to bring across two runs, taking a 5-3 lead. Weber State used a sacrifice fly to add one more in the sixth, taking a 6-3 lead.

The Vikings were unable to find late-inning magic as the Wildcats walked away with the 6-3 win and 2-1 series victory.

Both teams recorded ten hits in the contest, with Tayler Gunesch, Menlove, and Maddie Thompson leading the way for the Vikings with two hits each.

Gaona took the loss in the circle, moving her record to 3-1 on the year.

Portland State will look ahead to the Big Sky Conference tournament on May 13-15 in Ogden, Utah. The top six teams will compete for the conference title in the double-elimination tournament. The tournament champion will earn the Big Sky's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
