EUGENE, Ore. — A rare home meet put the Portland State track & field program in the spotlight Saturday, as the Vikings hosted the NW Distance Jamboree out at Lane Community College's Titan Stadium. That spotlight gave the Vikings a chance to show their depth up and down the distance events, as the meet featured races at every distance from the 800 to the 10,000 meters, including the steeplechase.
Â
No event showcased the Vikings' depth better than the men's 5,000 meters where three of the six Viking participants cracked 15 minutes for the first time.
Sam Lingwall,
Brandon Hippe and
Truett Bostwick all dipped under 15 minutes, with Lingwall leading the trio in 14:52.12, while HIppe and Bostwick followed in 14:53.63 and 14:57.01, respectively. Bostwick's time moved him up to fourth in the freshman top 10 at Portland State in the 5,000 meters.
Â
Cam McChensey,
Kelly Shedd and
Erik Solano also ran for the Vikings in the men's 5k, finishing in 15:33.73, 15:47.17 and 16:16.03, respectively.
Â
Tatum Miller also entered the freshman top 10 on the women's side of the 5k, as she and sophomore
Sophie Jones finished in 17:57.53 and 18:23.02, respectively. Miller's time moved her up to sixth in the freshman top 10 at Portland State.
Â
Phoebe Brown and
Evan Peters placed second on either side of the steeplechase Saturday. Brown was the first of the two on the track as she ran the women's steeplechase in 11:38.63. That didn't give Brown a new personal best in the event, but it did mark a four-second improvement from her 2019 opener in the steeplechase.
Â
Peters, meanwhile, was running his first collegiate steeplechase Saturday, and finished the men's race in 9:29.56. That time put Peters only four and a half seconds off the No. 10 mark all-time in the steeplechase, which Nathan Endicott set at 9:25.04Â in 2010.
Â
Monica Salazar made her debut in the women's 10k, and equated herself well in the event while finishing in 38:23.56.
Â
Jack Rubalcave led a trio of Vikings in the second section of the men's 800 meters while setting a four-second PSU best with a time of 2:00.69.
Logan Fisher followed Rubalcave in 2:02.85, while
Rashid Muse finished in 2:07.22.
Â
The Vikings will next compete at the John Knight Twilight on April 9.
