MANOA, Hawaii – The Portland State women's tennis team put up two points against the University of Hawaii on Thursday despite playing short-handed for the majority of the dual. The 'Bows earned a 4-2 victory, dropping the Vikings to 6-9 on the season while they improved to 5-3 overall.
The Vikings secured the first point of the dual after a series of 7-5 matches in doubles play. Pulling out a win at line three was Gerda Upeniece and Ashley Ramirez while Lotti Meszaros and Emily Rees did the same on court two to secure the 1-0 Viking advantage. A banged-up Makoto Ohara and Capu Sanoner battled at the No. 1 spot but fell 7-5 to Hawaii's Satsuki Takamura and Nikola Dolakova.
With Sanoner and Ohara opting out of singles action due to injury, the Vikings had their work cut out for them, needing to win three of their four singles matches to earn the victory.
Due to a Hawai'i forfeit at 6-4, 2-1 on court three, Ashley Ramirez picked up the only win in singles play for Portland State. Meszaros and Rees were both defeated at the top two spots, leading to a 4-2 win for the 'Bows. Upeniece's match was declared unfinished at No. 4 following the clinch.
