Menlove and Frost Fuel Vikings In Pair of Close Losses to Boise State, No. 6 Oregon

EUGENE – Despite big numbers from Rachel Menlove and Allicitie Frost, the Portland State softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at the Oregon Invitational in Eugene on Saturday.

PSU fell 6-4 in a ten-inning contest to Boise State to begin the day before testing No.6 Oregon in a 4-2 loss. Despite going 0-2 on the day, the Vikings saw a pair of impressive individual performances in their second weekend of action.

Menlove was the story of the day for the Vikings offense, putting together a monstrous performance at the plate in back-to-back games, going 5-7 with two home runs and 3 RBI in the doubleheader. Frost highlighted the pitching staff with a stellar collegiate debut in the circle against the Ducks, tossing a no-hitter through four innings.

PSU went ten innings with the Broncos after a Paetynn Lopez home run knotted things at two in the top of the sixth.

The Vikings took the lead in the top of the eighth after Marissa Bruno brought Mariah Rodriguez home from second base. The Broncos answered, locking things at three in the bottom half of the inning. After a quiet ninth inning from both sides, Rodriguez played part in another lead change in the tenth, this time hitting an infield single to score Ariana Abalos from third.

The Broncos finally broke through in their half of the tenth, ending the game with a three-run walk-off home run.

Olivia Grey started in the circle for the Vikings, giving up just five hits through six innings while striking out nine. Katie Schroeder took over in the seventh frame holding the Broncos scoreless to push the game to extras. The redshirt senior finished out the contest, taking the loss in the end.

Frost took the circle in game two against the sixth-ranked Ducks. The freshman held the potent Duck offense to just three hits in a complete game performance.

Frost gave up the first hit of the game in the fifth inning leading to a 2-0 Duck lead. Adding another pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Vikings headed to the seventh trailing 4-0. Menlove struck in the final inning belting a two-run home run to give PSU some life but the Ducks managed to escape sealing a 4-2 victory.

Frost ended the game with six strikeouts, stranding six Oregon base runners in the contest. Menlove was a perfect 3-3, tallying three of the four Viking hits while Lopez recorded the other.

Portland State will return to action tomorrow facing Boise State (10 A.M.) and Oregon (3 P.M.).
