MISSOULA – In search of its first victory of the season the Portland state women's soccer team couldn't get the job done in Missoula on Sunday afternoon, falling to the undefeated Montana Grizzlies (5-0-0, 4-0-0 BSC) by a score of 3-0.
Just three minutes into the match, Viking junior
Olivia Stone nearly gave the Vikings an early lead after seeing a shot on target get deflected by Montana's Claire Howard.
Taylor Stoeger of the Grizzlies netted the first goal of the day at 13:37 to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 advantage. A strong defensive effort from the Vikings resulted in a 32-minute scoring drought for the remainder of the period, despite facing five corner kick threats from Montana's offense.
Spending all 90 minutes in goal for the Vikings,
Enya Hernandez faced 10 shots in the second period, five of those occurring in the opening 15 minutes. The Grizzlies cashed in on a second goal at 53:32 before adding another strike in the 78th minute to secure a 3-0 lead.
Teá Poore and
Liv Lagerquist fired off a pair of shots in the final two minutes of action, putting both on goal but failing to connect, leading to a 3-0 UM victory.
Hernandez matched her season-high of seven saves on the day, while the Vikings were held to a season-low three shots.
