Sanoner Captures Ninth Doubles Victory In Vikings' Loss To Point Loma

SAN DIEGO - The Portland State women's tennis team was unable to hold off Point Loma University on Friday afternoon, falling in a 4-0 decision to close out the week.

The loss drops Portland State to 5-7 overall but Head Coach Kyle Russell and his squad still remain at the top of the Big Sky rankings, holding a 2-0 mark in conference play. The regionally ranked Sea Lions improved to 4-2 on the year.

Injuries continue to haunt the Vikings as the six-man roster has rallied this week despite playing short-handed in both doubles and singles action.

Lighting a spark early for the Vikings at No. 1 doubles was Capu Sanoner and Ashley Ramirez. The pair dominated their way to a 6-1 victory in just their second appearance as a duo this season.

The win marks the ninth doubles victory of Sanoner's impressive freshman season as she improves to 9-2 on the year. Ramirez trails closely behind holding an 8-4 overall record in doubles play, winning the majority of those alongside Gerda Upeniece at line three.

The Sea Lions notched the doubles match at No. 2, giving themselves a 1-0 lead to open the dual.

Securing a pair of wins on courts four and five, the Sea Lions locked in the dual at 4-0. The early defeat left three matches unfinished, all three appearing to lean in favor of Portland State.

At the top spot, Lotti Meszaros dropped the opening set of her match but fought her way back to a second set victory while Sanoner was brewing a comeback of her own, pushing Thelma Sepulveda to a third set on court two. It was no different for Viking junior Emily Rees who was just a single game away from defeating Point Loma's Faith Pearson on line three.

The Vikings will rest this weekend before returning to action in Hawaii early next week. PSU will play four matches over five days, beginning with Hawaii Pacific on Monday at 1 p.m. PT.
