CHENEY, Wash. – The Portland State women's soccer team fell 3-1 to Eastern Washington in its season opener on Friday.
The Vikings fall to 0-1 on the season while the Eagles pick up their first win of the season at 1-0.
EWU struck quickly to open the match, finding the net in the seventh minute to give themselves an early 1-0 lead.
After a quiet end to the first half, the Eagles netted their second goal shortly after the break in the 52nd minute to take a 2-0 lead. At the 64th minute mark, the Vikings' 2019 leading scorer Sienna Higinbotham did what she does best and put the Vikings back in contention with an unassisted goal of her own.
The Eagles were able to hold off Portland State's offensive attack for the remainder of the contest while scoring their third goal in the 81st minute en route to a 3-1 victory.
Higinbotham led PSU with three shots putting two of those on target. Kasey Isobe, Megan Cornett, Sofi Papastamos, Olivia Stone, Liv Lagerquist, and Raniyah Burton also added to the Vikings' shot total.
EWU put up 18 shots (10 SOG) against PSU goalkeeper Enya Hernandez. The sophomore spent all 90 minutes in goal for the Vikings recording seven saves in the contest.
Portland State will get another opportunity on Sunday at 12 p.m. as they take on EWU to close out the weekend.
