SEATTLE – The Portland State softball team dropped the first game of the Husky Classic 5-3 to Seattle on Friday, despite a big performance at the plate from Olivia Dean.
The Vikings are now 1-9 on the season while Seattle improves to 10-11.
Dean had herself a day at the plate, leading the Vikings offense going 4-4 with one home run and 2 RBI. The junior transfer out of Centralia College took part in all three of the Vikings' scoring plays against the Redhawks.
Portland State was the first to get on the scoreboard when Dean belted a solo home run to put the Vikings on top 1-0 in the third. Seattle wasted no time responding, adding a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
The Vikings offense pushed one more across in the top of the fifth thanks to a Paetynn Lopez RBI that scored Dean from second base. Once again, SU was able to match the Vikings offense, knotting things at two before heading to the sixth inning.
Dean's bat stayed hot, adding another RBI to score Hannah Sisul giving the Vikings a 3-2 advantage in the sixth inning. Seattle continued the scoring pattern, matching PSU's run while tacking on two more to take a 5-3 lead.
Unable to cash any runs in the seventh, Portland State dropped the game 5-3.
Three Vikings made an appearance in the circle during the contest. Katie Schroeder started the game before being replaced by Olivia Grey after 4.1 innings of work. Bailey Rose was the final Viking to face Seattle's offense appearing for the final two outs of the sixth inning. Rose notched two strikeouts in her short appearance while Schroeder and Grey combined for five more.
Sisul and Maddie Thompson followed closely behind Dean, each contributing a pair of hits to the Vikings' total (10).
Looking to rebound, the Vikings will have a chance to do just that as they face No. 8 Washington (1 PM) and Seattle (5 PM) on Saturday.
